Forget voters register – Nyaho tells NPP

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe has advised the party to forget about it concerns over the country’s voters’ register and focus on how to win the 2016 general elections.

According to him, there is no clean voters’ register in any democratic dispensation globally including the United States, hence the NPP should let go the demand for a new register.

“What you have to do as a political party rather is to make sure you focus on your party and organise your party properly to fight that election,” he said on 3FM’s Sunrise morning show Wednesday.

The NPP last year raised issues with the current voters’ register claiming it is fraught with minors and other ineligible voters, hence urged the Electoral Commission to come up a new register for the 2016 elections.

Various pressure groups joined the call but the EC rejected the demands. The NPP and pressure groups have since asked the EC to validate the register but the Commission says it will rather have a voters’ register exhibition instead.

But Dr Tamakloe told 3FM that his party is focusing on the wrong issues as he wondered why the party is insisting on getting a new register for the November polls since he said the same register has won them elections before

“We used this same register to win an election before and even used it to claim that we were cheated and went to the Supreme Court. So why can’t we use that register now. The excuses that we are giving will not be listened to by anybody so we rather have to focus on our party and make sure we get the right people at the constituencies.

He said unfortunately, the party is not focused on getting the right persons to represent them at the constituencies, noting “hat is the concern and not the register. We used the register just two months ago just for a by-election so I don’t know what the argument is about”.

Alleged abuse of incumbency

Meanwhile, Dr Tamakloe has taken a swipe at the founder of the Progressive People’s Party, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom over his recent comments that President John Mahama is abusing incumbency by using the taxpayers money for his campaign .

Dr Nduom accused President John Mahama of using taxpayers’ money to finance his ‘Accounting to the People’ tour which he deemed to be more of a campaign than official duties.http://ghanapoliticsonline.com/

But Dr Tamakloe disagreed with Dr Nduom, saying ” As a president, if he’s travelling, he has to use the tax payers’ money because we did it during Kufuor’s era.I have been part of the commissioning of the district hospital at Ada where I was with former President Kufuor and he didn’t use his own car because we all went in state cars”.

He asked Dr Nduom to shun the “hypocrisy” because should he become president , “he shouldn’t tell me he wouldn’t use state resources to campaign because that’s hypocrisy. As we are now, there is no law barring any president from doing that”.
