Filing of nomination begins today

Presidential and parliamentary hopefuls have today September 29 and Friday September 30 to file their nomination forms in order to contest the elections.
They are expected to return thier forms with an amount of Gh¢50,000 for presidential hopefuls and by September 30.

The figure is 500 percent from the GH¢10,000 paid by presidential candidates in the 2012 elections.

Parliamentary candidates are also to pay 10,000 as against the GH¢1,000 paid in the last elections. The new figure is a 1,000 percent increment from the previous amount.

Some political parties have argued that the filing fee is expensive while others believe otherwise.

One of the leading parties against the increase in the filing fees, the Progressive Peoples Party has filed a suit in court on the matter.

A week ago (September 29, 2016), the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission Charlotte Osei said twenty-three people have picked up nomination forms to contest this year’s presidential elections.

“So far 23 persons have picked up nomination forms to become Presidential candidates. This is made up of 16 political party presidential aspirants and 7 independent presidential aspirants.”
