EOCO Orders Ibrahim Mahama To Pay GHC 12.7m

brother of former President John Dramani Mahama,ibrahim mahama has been asked to pay a sum of GHC 12.7 million to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The directive was communicated to Ibrahim, who is the CEO of Engineers & Planners, at the EOCO office in Accra on Friday.

The amount will pay for the GHc10 million Ibrahim is said to owe the GRA in duties for heavy duty equipment he imported into the country.

The extra two million and seven hundred thousand is said to be interest that has accrued on the debt.

The interest was calculated by GRA, a source at the presidency told this website.

We understands that Ibrahim has until May 8 this year to pay the money.

The moves comes after several days of grilling the Engineers & Planners CEO by EOCO, a move that culminated in the anti-corruption body seizing his passport.

Ibrahim had been accused of issuing 44 dud cheques to the customs as payment for duties on heavy-duty equipment he imported into the country.
The cheques for Ghc10 million, which were reportedly submitted last year when the equipment arrived at the Port of Tema, bounced when the GRA went to process them at the banks.

Earlier, some supporters of Ibrahim gathered at the EOCO office to solidarise with him.

Meanwhile, Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has condemned EOCO’s probe of Ibrahim, describing it as a witch-hunt.

In an interview with Accra-based Starr FM, Tamakloe said Ibrahim, who is his nephew, committed no wrong.

According to him, all businessmen issue post-dated cheques and that there was nothing wrong with Ibrahim doing that.

He accused President Nana Akufo-Addo of personally orchestrating the witch-hunt.

“What surprises me is that this is happening under the nose of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo —somebody I sacrificed my life for and he knows it. That is what surprises me but I wouldn’t like to talk much on that because I have also held him, until recently, [to be] one of the true democrats. But if this can happen under his nose then I can think we are in a different era,” he said, adding that the whole affair was “vindictive” and smacked of “malicious persecution” reminiscent of the PNDC days.

“The prejudicial comments against Ibrahim are inconsistent with democratic parties and rule of law, they are more consistent with what we saw in the PNDC days when entrepreneurs were declared guilty before trial,” he added.
