EC Says No Voter Will Be Disenfranchised In 2016 General Election

More than seven thousand registered voters in the Ashanti region have had their bio-metric data deleted from the EC’s Voters’ Register for using National Health Insurance Scheme Identity Cards.

The EC has subsequently reserved 10 out of the three-week period for the ongoing Exhibition to re-register.

Atwima Mponua Constituency has the highest number of such cases of about 1,700 with other constituencies having less than 10 such cases.

A Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of the EC, Lawrence Sarpong said the failure of the device to recognize the voter will not disenfranchise anybody provided all other relevant details are captured.

Mr Sarpong noted that a few challenges had been reported from about 20 of the Centres with the BVD but the devices have been replaced.

In the Afigya Kwabre Constituency for instance, one of the officials had come to the Regional office to report of a broken down computer being used to re-register the nearly 700 voters who have their particulars deleted.

Mr Sarpong said the EC has enough backups to ensure the success of the exercise.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has refuted reports that lack of adequate publicity is to blame for the low turnout of the voters exhibition exercise.

Speaking to GBC, the Commission’s Director of Communications, Eric Dzakpasu said it is the usual attitude of Ghanaians to show late interest in events of this kind, adding that the EC is intensifying its publicity drive through the media.

He however called on other stakeholders like the political parties and the media to play their roles to whip up public interest in the exhibition exercise.
