EC Chair renders committee members useless – LMVCA

Convener of the Let My Votes Count Alliance (LMVCA) David Asante has stated that his group doesn’t have confidence in the five member panel to do objective and unbiased work after the prejudicial comments by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).

He said the remarks of the EC Chair show she has also taken a fixed position against one side of the debate.

“Since the panel is an advisory body that can only recommend to the EC upon which the commission can adhere to or ignore her comment reflects the final outcome of the exercise” he said.

The Electoral Commission organized a two day public forum on Ghana’s voters’ register at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

The forum which was organized to seek public opinion on the need for a new electoral roll before the 2016 general elections was chaired by a five member panel.

After the major stake holders have finished with their presentations on Friday, Mrs. Charlotte Osei in her responds stated that compiling a new voters’ register across the 30,000 polling stations could be recipe for chaos.

She said given the entrenched positions adopted by the two main political parties- the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) attempting to undertake registration for an entirely new electoral roll may have serious security problems.

However speaking on an Accra based radio station, David Asante accused the Chairperson of EC of setting up NDC panel to skew the debate in favor of the ruling party.

The leader of the group which is one of the main organizations championing the campaign for a new electoral album went on to question the standing and credibility of some political parties who came to express their views at the forum.

Mr. Asante also stated that “it will be injurious for the democracy we currently enjoy in Ghana for the EC to do a head count of people who are for or against the need for a new register than to look into impeccable evidence presented by the NPP”.
