Dzifa Gomashie bags another award

Among the serving ministers of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie is believed to be the one who has bagged the most awards due to her dedication to duty and other activities outside her job as a minister.

On March 7, 2016, the City Council of Philadelphia in the United States honoured and recognised the minister for her lifelong commitment to the developmental growth of Ghana through her international promotion of Ghanaian arts and culture.

A citation accompanying the award read in part: “Deputy Minister Gomashie has a passion for the Creative Arts and Culture and has dedicated nearly all her adult life to projecting and promoting Ghanaian and African values. Prior to her appointment as a Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, she worked as the Chief Executive of Values for Life, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting the creative arts, performing arts and culture among the youth.”

The citation went on to say that she was also the managing director of Mama’s Kitchen, a restaurant that specialised in indigenous local Ghanaian dishes and had worked in the creative arts industry for nearly three decades, among other things producing and directing many Ghanaian television productions including the popular storytelling programme, ‘By the Fireside’. She was also a popular actress.”

The City of Philadelphia believed the recognition would spur her on to greater things. The minister, a hugely popular personality in Ghana, is known for her humble disposition and promotion of anything Ghanaian.

Madam Gomashie has been recognised and honoured by the Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS) on two occasions for her enormous support and love shown to the GUPS women commission and also for her unflinching support to the student fraternity and continuous contribution to development of the youth of Ghana.

The Autism Association of Ghana (ASOG), has also made her their life patron, for being a source of encouragement to parents of children with autism.

The Young Ghanaian Poets Network, the St Louis Past Students Association and the Ghana Institute of Languages have all honoured and recognised her for her hard work.
