Dumsor hits Kotoka International Airport

Passengers at the arrival hall of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) were on Saturday afternoon left in total darkness for close to an hour after power supply to certain parts of the airport went off.

The power cut which happened around four o’clock in the afternoon, brought activities at portions of terminal two to a standstill forcing officials and passengers to switch on lights from their mobile phones to navigate through the darkness.

Passengers were forced to wait for hours at the baggage claim area of the arrival hall as the airport’s carousels grinded to a halt due to the black out.

Some of the passengers who spoke to Citi Business News said they were shocked by the development.

One of them said ‘I can’t believe this is happening, Ghana’s premier international airport in darkness, this is disgraceful’.

It is unclear what led to the blackout but the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) in a statement to Citi Business News apologized to passengers and stakeholders for the disruption in power supply.

The Minister of Transport Fiifi Kwetey recently inspected ongoing works at KIA and stated that over 70% of the project at the arrival hall at terminal two had been completed.

Meanwhile Citi Business News has gathered that the Ghana Airport Company Limited has acquired a 5000KVA gen set as back up for terminal two to supply power anytime the national grid goes off.
