#CPPpolls: Police use CPP polls for simulation

The Accra Regional Police Commander COP George Akuffo Dampare has said that the CPP Congress, which will be held today January 30, will be used as dress rehearsal by the Ghana Police Service for national elections later in 2016.

COP Dampare stated that the event will be used to test the preparedness of the police ahead of a busy political year and the general elections on November 7.

He was addressing a police contingent which had been deployed to maintain peace and order at the Accra Trade Fair Centre where the CPP is getting ready to elect a flagbearer to lead the party into the general elections.

“As you are aware, the game has started. We are using this exercise to test our preparedness for the many activities that are lined up for us during this busy and crucial year, which is the election year for our dear country.”

“We should go out there and show class, we should be out there embarking upon doing things differently during this year’s election such that everybody will know that we have come of age as an institution when it comes to policing elections,” COP Dampare said to his men .

Four candidates are contesting to pick the flagbearer slot of the Nkrumahist party.

They include Samia Yaba Nkrumah, a former chairperson of the party and former Member of Parliament for Jomoro; Mr Bright Akwetey, a lawyer, Mr Joseph Agyepong, a party stalwart in the diaspora and businessman; and Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, a former General Secretary of the party.

About 3,000 delegates are expected to converge on the International Trade Fair Centre in Accra to take part in Saturday’s primaries.

Despite an interlocutory injunction suit filed against the process by a disqualified flagbearer-aspirant Onsy Nathan Kwame Nkrumah, Chairman of the party, Prof Edmund Delle has said the presidential primaries will come off as planned.

Mr Nkrumah was disqualified from taking part in the race with the reason that he issued a dud cheque in paying for his nomination forms, according to General Secretary Nii Armah Akomfrah.
