Commercial Drivers to go on demo July, 10

Members of the Concerned Drivers Association have threatened to stage a demonstration on July 10, against the government for the introduction of a supposed new Driver’s license into the system.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has said it will begin issuing new biometric driver’s licences with improved security features from July 18, 2017.

The new improved features will include a contactless chip that will store the biometric details of the holder.

The Deputy Public Relations Director of the DVLA, Kwaku Darko Afari told Kasapa 102.5 FM that the the new arrangement is aimed at getting rid of fake licences and also flush out middlemen, popularly known as ‘goro boys’ from the system.

But the commercial drivers argued the new license will not improve their lots, hence they are against it.

“What we’ve noticed is that the NPP government is always toughening up the system to make it difficult for us to survive in our businesses anytime they come to power. This new license is at a cost of GHS 450 how are we supposed to meet this outrageous cost. Fuel has been increased and road tolls will be increased from next week, things are tough for us. ” a leading member of the group, Paa Willie lamented in an interview with host Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM.

The group has set July 1, 2017 for a Press Conference to be held in the capital to drum home the message to government on their intended action, which will be followed by a nationwide demonstration on July 10.
