Chiefs of Volta Endorse John Mahama

Nana Saafo Attara II, the Adontenhene of the Dodo Traditional area in the Volta region has given a resounding endorsement to President Mahama during his ‘Accounting to the People’ of the Volta Region from Tuesday.

According to the chief, his endorsement is a universal reflection of what others in the Volta Region felt, “People in Accra and the bigger cities who claim, we the people in this part of the Volta region can sit there and do their politics. Nana Saafo Attara II who is also the chief or Pepesu could not hide his excitement when he spoke to journalists ahead of the official commissioning of the 46.4 kilometer Nkwanta-Dodo-Pepesu highway by President John Mahama.

According to the Adontenhene of Nkwanta, the completion of the project has reduced travel time from four hours to 45minutes. This according to him has enhanced economic activities in the area and is changing the phase of communities along the stretch.
He said, “We are exceedingly appreciative of what the President has done for us and we will surely reward him accordingly”.

Some young people who also spoke to this newspaper said the new road has made it easy to access nearby villages. “Now we make more money as compared to before….now I make about a hundred cedis a day, before I used you make about 20 cedis ” says Sadick who operates an Okada, commercial motorcycle transportation .

The Nkwanta-Dodo-Pepesu highway forms part of the Eastern Corridor Road which has been on the drawing board for over four decades. The 695 km stretch, is made up of a complex mix of roads traversing the Greater Accra, Volta, Northern and Upper East regions.
Besides direct impact on the lives of people in communities along the stretch, the Eastern corridor road will enhance transportation of Cargo from the Ports to Tamale and beyond and facilitate the transportation of food items from the ‘food baskets’ in the three regions of Northern Ghana.

Currently haulage truck drivers who lift cargo from Tema are compelled to use the Nsawam-Kumasi highway to the north, a distance that is costly and slows down business. However, they would have a convenient alternative in the newly inaugurated road.

President John Dramani Mahama started his three-day tour on Tuesday in the Volta Region-the main stronghold of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The three day tour would see the President inaugurate several development and infrastructural projects including the just inaugurated 46km Eastern Corridor Road from Dodo Pepesu- Nkwanta. He would also inspect the progress of work on the Dapa- Pampawie- Ahamasu Junction Cocoa Road and Inaugurate the famous Worawora- Dambai Road. He would further inaugurate the Fume- Dzolokpuita Road and cut the Sod for the commencement of the Juapong- Abutia Road.

This round of the President’s tour follows in the heels of what government communicators have described as a very successful tour of the Western Region and Eastern Region in the past couple of weeks.

In the Western and Eastern Regions, the President received rousing welcome by residents of the communities he visited and particularly impressed residents of the Afram Plains with the commissioning of two massive water ferries on the Volta lake, marking an significant turning points in the socio-economic lives of people, particularly traders along the Volta Lake who have been killed by several boat mishaps.
