Charlotte Osei is arrogant; it serves her right – Akua Donkor

Founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor has backed calls for Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Madam Charlotte Osei to step down following allegations of incompetence.

According to her, the EC boss has demonstrated that she is unqualified to occupy her current seat, adding that Parliament must immediately begin processes to impeach her.

EC boss Charlotte Osei has been in conflict with her two deputies, with both parties engaging in open exchanges in the media.

The issue was initially thought to be one of lightweight until a formal petition from some faceless EC officials was served to President Akufo-Addo to have Mrs Osei impeached. The EC boss, though, has rejected claims that she is incompetent, and has vowed to clear her name from all accusations levelled against her in court.

Some minority Members of Parliament (MPs) have called for the EC boss to step down following the controversy generated from her spat with her deputies. And Akua Donkor believes such a call is in the right direction.

“What I’m saying is that we cannot allow the Electoral Commission to steer the affairs of this country in spite of all these controversies,” Akua Donkor said in an interview with Atinka FM.

“They (the EC) can’t oversee credible elections anymore. The District Assembly elections is very near, and my own party will also be going for congress soon to elect our executives, but Charlotte Osei and her deputies cannot supervise it. All of them at the Electoral Commission must be removed.

If that is not done, then it means our Parliamentarians are also very untruthful.” The GFP founder went on to launch a tirade on Mrs Osei, describing the EC boss as “arrogant” following the decision to disqualify her from the 2016 elections. “So what I’m saying is that Charlotte Osei became too arrogant and she didn’t give me the needed respect.”

“When she took me out of the race for the 2016 elections, she made me suffer and suffer. At least she should have allowed us to contest, and if Ghanaians don’t vote for us it won’t matter. But she took us out very painfully.”

It is currently unknown whether Charlotte Osei will be impeached, however, President Akufo-Addo has forwarded the petition to the Chief Justice, Sophia Akufo.
