Berekum police arrest six Fulanis with 250 cattle

Six Fulani herdsmen have been arrested in Oforikrom near Berekum in the Brong Ahafo Region with 250 cattle, officials have said.

According to the Berekum Police Commander, Superintendent Asare Bediako, the herdsmen were stopped from making their cattle graze the lands at Berekum as they were accosted by a team of security personnel.

“We had intelligence four days ago that some Fulani herdsmen were heading towards Berekum and its environs. They had walked all the way to Berekum with the animals, but when they were stopped by the team of soldiers and police officers, they turned their guns at security officers but we managed to arrest six of them,” Superintendent Asare Bediako disclosed.

Superintendent Asare Bediako added that his outfit was being proactive to prevent any clash between the indigenes and the Fulani herdsmen as it is happening at Agogo.

The nomads have been at loggerheads with the Agogo inhabitants following the killing of over three people recently in the area. A herdsman was also injured in a scuffle leaving seven cattle dead.

A fortnight ago one person was shot by Fulani herdsmen at Agogo as the nomads fled to Fanteakwa in the Eastern region for refuge. The recent clashes and new cases of death have triggered another national debate over the continuous stay of the Fulanis in the country.
