Bail application for Afoko dismissed

An Accra High Court has dismissed a bail application filed by lawyers of Gregory Afoko, who has been charged for murdering the Upper East Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Adams Mahama died after an acid attack in May, 2015. The Court on Tuesday, June 28 agreed with the prosecution that accused person’s life would be in danger if he is granted bail, TV3’s correspondent reported.

The Court also agreed with Matthew Amponsah that he will intimidate prosecution witness if granted bail, TV3’s Godfred Tanam added, and may even travel outside. The judge, Justice Mensah, however, warned counsel for the accused not to consider the bail application grounds to drag the case interminably.

If it happens, he further warned, he can take any decision just as he did on Tuesday.

Gregory Afoko, a brother to suspended National Chairman of the NPP, was arrested as the prime suspect in the murder case. A second suspect has also been standing trial.
