Attahiru Jega expresses confidence in Charlotte Osei

The celebrated former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria, Prof Attahiru Jega, has expressed confidence in the ability of the Electoral Commissioner of Ghana, Mrs Charlotte Osei, asking her to remain focused ahead of the December polls.

Jega, who spoke on Thursday with Ghana Decides which is a a non-partisan blogging project funded by STAR-Ghana to improve the participation of youth and the vulnerable in the electoral process, said the EC must not fail Ghanaians.

“I really believe that she is doing a very commendable job in very difficult circumstances and I want to encourage her, she must remain focused,” Prof. Jega added.

The EC Chair disqualified 13 candidates including Dr Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party, Edward Mahama of the People’s National Convention and Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP) over errors in the nomination forms they filed.
But an Accra High Court last week Friday ordered the EC to allow Dr Nduom of the PPP to amend the errors on his forms and resubmit them for consideration by the EC.

The EC has since challenged the ruling at the Supreme Court. Some Ghanaians believe that the many law suits will make the EC lose focus for the December 7 polls, and have therefore advocated for dialogue among the aggrieved parties.

However, former Attorney General, Mr. Martin Amidu, said the EC is already on a ‘rigging agenda’ following its decision to disqualify Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom from contesting in the polls.

But Jega said he has no doubt that Charlotte Osei will do her best to ensure credible elections come December.

Prof. Jega was hailed for ensuring a free and fair election in Nigeria after he succeeded Maurice Iwu in June, 2010. Prof.Jega conducted the 2011 and 2015 general elections
