Asanteman observes one-week of Queen mother’s death

The Ashanti Kingdom today is observing one week of the death of the Queen mother of Asanteman, Nana Afia Kobi Ampem II.

Paramount chiefs and other dignitaries including First Lady, Nana Lordina Mahama have been commiserating with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II ahead the one-week observation.

The 111-year-old queen mother of the Ashanti Kingdom, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, who reigned for 39 years, joined her ancestors last Monday, an official statement from Manhyia Palace announced.

The late Nana Afia Kobi was enstooled in 1977 as the 13th queen mother of the Asante Kingdom since 1695 after the late Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko II who reigned from 1945 to 1977.

She saw the reign of the late Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, as Asantehene who reigned from 1970 to 1999.

Many described the late queen mother as a repository of wisdom.

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu, who is the son of the queen mother, is expected to name a successor after a 40-day-period.

Today’s mourning is expected to see thousands of people at Dwabrem at the Manhyia Palace to observe the rich culture of the Ashantis’.

Already many beverage companies, as well as other organisations, are reported to be donating towards the day.

Also a number of media outlets are also pitching camp to provide exclusive coverage of the one-week observation.
