Armed robbers killed Police Officer

A police officer stationed at Bimbilla in the Northern Region met his untimely death last Friday afternoon when he was shot in the right rib by armed robbers suspected to be of Fulani descent.

The incident occurred around 1pm on the section of the road between Ejura and Hiawonwu in the Ejura Sekyedumasi municipality.

Corporal Alexander Kyeremeh, aged 30, was travelling from Yeji to Kumasi when the incident occurred.

Confirming the incident to Graphic Online, the Ejura District commander of Police, Superintendent Anthony Appiah, said the deceased was on board a bus travelling from Yeji to Kumasi.

He said the armed robbers had earlier intercepted one bus travelling from Atebubu to Kumasi and when his bus got on the scene, they were also stopped and ordered to surrender all the monies on them.

According to him, the robbers were three with a fourth one hiding in the bush.

He said when the deceased was getting down, he hid some of the money in his pants and was seen by the fourth robber who was hiding in the bush.

Supt Appiah said the fourth robber, came out of his hiding place, opened the deceased’s belt and took out the money from his trousers and shot him in the right rib making his intestines to gush out.

He said when information got the police, “we quickly moved in but then, they had fled the scene. We have combed the whole area including the surrounding villages but found no trace of them,” he said, adding that the police left message with the surrounding communities to inform the police of any suspicious characters.

According to Supt Appiah, Corporal Kyeremeh was sent to the Ejura Government Hospital where he died some three minutes later.

The Mampong scarp on the Ejura-Mampong road has been noted for armed robbery activities by Fulani herdsmen who normally lay ambush in the surrounding forest and attack commuters.

Communities around Ejura and Agogo, both farming areas, have been suffering the brunt of activities of these nomadic herdsmen, who have been accused of visiting mayhem on the people.

Just last week, a traditional priest was reportedly shot by a Fulani herdsman on his farm for attempting to drive away the herds from his farm.
