Alban Bagbin to join NDC 2020 flagbearership race?

The second deputy Speaker and Member of Parliament (MP) for Nadowli Kaleo Constituency in the Upper West Region, Alban Bagbin may join the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC)2020 flagbearership race, he has hinted.

According to him, he has since his childhood, dreamt of becoming President and it would not surprise those close to him especially his basic school teachers who are aware of this long-nursed dream if he decides to join the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbeareship race in 2020.

“Won’t you be happy if I contest,” he said in response to a question while addressing the media at Takpo in the Upper West region.

Mr Bagbin’s revelation comes at a time when the NDC is seeking answers to what caused its heavy defeat in the 2016 general elections which saw its candidate, former President John Mahama lose by close to one million votes to the NPP’s Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the presidential election while it lost over 50 seats in the parliamentary polls.

This unprecedented defeat sparked tensions with a series of accusations by the party’s grassroot supporters against the executives over the misappropriation of campaign funds among others leading to calls for an early congress in order to change the leadership of the party.

Former President Mahama at a recent meeting with party executives and appointees of his government advised party faithfuls members to be cautious of their utterances and concentrate on building the structures of the party instead of who becomes the flagbearer.

He likened the NDC to a race horse and explained that if the horse is lame, you concentrate on fixing the horse before thinking of maintaining or changing the jockey.

Mr Bagbin’s statement seems like an obvious disregard for the former President’s position.
