Akufo-Addo’s Wife Copying Lordina Mahama

Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, can’t wait to be First Lady even if for a day. The wife of the three-time opposition leader, has taken to hospital theaters, Out Patients Department (OPDs), maternity wards, carrying babies, and spreading gifts wrapped in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) paraphernalia, ahead of the November 7, Parliamentary and Presidential Elections.

For some days, Mrs. Akufo-Addo, who has subtly joined her husband on the campaign trail for the third time, is canvassing for votes in the Greater Accra Region; her home region by going to mainly health facilities dressed in party colours.

What is even more disingenuous about her movement with respect to the health facilities is that, she is followed by a large number of the NPP activists and fanatics fully dressed in party colours of red, blue and white, thus demonstrating the partisan approach of her gestures.

In what looks like an orchestrated plan to match the First Lady Lordina Mahama, and the works of the Lordina Foundation, Mrs. Akufo-Addo, was spotted in parts of the region distributing “provisions” to patients in hospital wards in NPP branded polythene bags.

Per some of the pictures shared from her outfit, she is seen carrying with newborn twins and sick babies in La General Hospital, Tema Polyclinic and Tema General Hospital handing out goodies to their mothers with a clear intent of winning their votes for her husband; Nana Akufo-Addo, who has since left Ghana on a 10-day visit to the United States of America (USA) and United Kingdom (UK), shortly after his five-day tour of the Ashanti Region.

She has also been to the Odododiodio, Ningo-Prampram Constituencies, lorry stations and markets and a few other places for votes. On one of the visits, she was in the company of Lawyer Frank Davies one of Nana Akufo-Addo’s protégés.

But the question on the lips of many is that, couldn’t Mrs. Akufo-Addo, embarked on this benevolent tour without making it so glaring to the public that she is campaigning for votes, especially at the hospitals?

Indeed, there are arguments that beneficiaries of her political gifts, who may be suffering from one sickness or the other, may not be interested in partisan politics at all and so though they may receive these gifts with some kind of smiles, they may think something else.

Already, the NPP is cleverly holding outdoor clinics in cities, towns and villages, where people are treated freely by party supporters who are health workers. This is used to demonize government as having collapsed the health sector, particularly the National Health Insurance, although the scheme is still running and very effective.

Over the past four years, Mrs. Mahama, has toured parts of the country to distribute hospital materials and equipment to deprived hospitals and clinics to complement government’s efforts at bringing quality healthcare to the people through her Non-governmental Organization (NGO) “Lordina Foundation”.

This NGO, has also done some work for the Gambaga Witches Camp in the Northern Region. In the past few days, she has been to the three Regions in the North, Brong Ahafo, Volta regions, and others with hospital equipment, wheelchairs, clutches, sewing machines, hairdryers among others in the name of the Foundation, which apart from charity work, is also into assisting girls to acquire vocational skills.

Recently, wives of African envoys, as well as some female ambassadors in Japan in May this year, made financial contributions to support her projects. She started this after becoming First Lady, not before. Prior to this, she had kept a rather private life.

Interestingly, unlike what is being portrayed by the wife of her husband’s opponent, Mrs. Mahama, has distributed the items with no party colour, but consistently stuck to her agenda to support government in making the lives of the people better, rather than scoring political points.
