Akufo Addo’s Desperation Driving Him into Making Lofty Promises – Young Cadres

This year’s electioneering campaign season has been largely issues-based so far and Ghanaians should be happy for this. But in a rather in bizarre tinge to the campaign season, some Presidential candidates have been at the forefront of making huge, and somehow, unrealistic promises to the electorates. The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akuffo Addo has been the chief culprit of this dishonest means of winning votes. For him, having his last shot at the Presidency means that he can throw all sorts of idealistic promises that only he and his disorganized party can make and go scot-free. Clearly, it is out of pure desperation that will make a man who has not been able to put his own house in order to be going on this tangent of campaigning. Nana Akufo Addo should credit the good people of Ghana with some intelligence.

After making an empty promise of rolling out his so-called ‘one district-one factory’, Nana Akufo Addo has gone on to make more deceitful promises simply because Ghanaians have failed to take him on to explain how such an impracticable plan would work. And even for institutions like IMANI that has dared to take him and his party on, it has been expectedly met with insults and attacks. And this general lack of criticism has enabled the NPP flagbearer to make, yet again, two more unfeasible promises, namely his promise to create another region out of the Western region and a plan to build one dam per village in the three Northern regions. Is Nana Addo listening to himself or has he got any minders at all who give him sound advice?

For us in the Young Cadres Association (YCA), we would like the good people of Ghana to be guided by history in considering the numerous promises being churned out daily by the NPP and its octogenarian flagbearer. Having the benefit of history, we would like to remind Ghanaians of some of the humungous promises made by the NPP in the 2000 elections. In the said elections, the NPP promised Ghanaians they would build a railway line from Accra to Paga and to link it with other landlocked countries in the region. They also promised every Ghanaian youth a job should they come to power. Yet again, they promised to develop Nima in Accra into high-rise apartment buildings. And to cap it all, they promised to convert every ‘chop bar’ in Ghana into modern restaurants. But what did we see in the eight years they were in power as far as these promises were concerned? Not a single kilometer of railway was laid, and neither did every youth in Ghana get employed in their time in office.

Against this backdrop, we find Nana Akufo Addo’s promise-making galore as a repetition of history; a repetition that is deceptive, dangerous for our democracy, and that will not augur well for Ghanaians if we fall for it. Akufo Addo and his desperate NPP should refrain from using deceitful tactics to gain the votes of unsuspecting Ghanaians.

Seeing that most areas he has toured so far are already benefiting from the transformational agenda of President Mahama’s government, Akufo Addo is understandably left with no other option than to make promises that he himself finds very difficult to believe in.
We the Young Cadres would like to remind all well-meaning Ghanaians that President Mahama is delivering on his promise to transform Ghana and we are all living witnesses to this. The numerous hospitals, educational infrastructure, thousands of kilometers of roads and electrification projects all attest to the change. With these, the foundation has been made and President Mahama’s next term promises to thrust Ghana onto the next pedestal of its development.

Long live Ghana
