Akufo-Addo approved house for Mahama – Majority Leader

Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has revealed that President Nana Akufo-Addo endorsed the decision for government to provide a house for ex-president John Mahama.

Mr Mahama has communicated that he wishes to have as his retirement home the same residence he occupied as president.

Confirming the information, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) never provided a house for ex-president John Agyekum Kufour after his tenure but “Akufo-Addo was of the view that we should not repay evil with evil”.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu indicated that Mr Akufo-Addo entreated him to ensure that when the issue came up for discussion in parliament “we should say that government would give him (Mr Mahama) a house and an office”.

“Nana said we should do something that will bring honour to Mahama,” he added, even though an earlier recommendation had suggested 40% of the ex-president’s monthly salary be given him for accommodation, instead of being given a house.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was, however, quick to add that the decision did not say that the former president should live in the same house he was currently occupying.

“We didn’t include that his current residence be given to him; that is not what we said,” he clarified in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokorokoo on Monday January 9.
