Afoko’s lawyer accuses Akufo-Addo of bias

Lawyer for suspended chairman of the New Patriotic Party Paul Afoko is accusing party flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo of bias.

Martin Kpebu says Nana Akufo-Addo is taking sides in the ongoing internal leadership crisis which has wrecked the party for some weeks now.

Acting chairman of the party Freddy Blay is chairing a National Executive Committee today in spite of a warning by Mr Afoko that the meeting is illegal. Supporters of Mr. Afoko are in court seeking to restrain among others, Freddy Blay from holding himself out as acting national chairman of the NPP.

Nana Akufo-Addo and his running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia were seen walking into the meeting taking place at the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra, Joy News’ Kwakye Afreh Nuamah reports.

This is the first time the two are participating in such a high-level meeting after the controversial suspension of Mr. Afoko, accused of discreetly sabotaging the party’s presidential bid.

High on the agenda of the National Executive Committee would be the internal leadership crisis. The outstanding parliamentary primaries in some constituencies would also feature in the meeting, Afreh gathered.

Martin Kpebu told Joy News by attending the ‘illegal” meeting, Akufo-Addo has compromised his position as the flagbearer. The presidential candidate is required to be neutral, he stated.

But Akufo-Addo’s action indicates that he is “recognising lawyer Blay as the acting chairman,” he complained.

He has also been accused of flouting the court processes, but it is not clear if he would be cited for contempt.

It is “unfortunate” if he does participate in the meeting, Martin Kpebu put it in a “mild” way.
