Afari Gyan is a global icon – EC boss

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission Charlotte Osei has heaped praises on her predecessor Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, describing him as a global icon in elections.

According to her, the retired commissioner is respected worldwide for his contributions to transparent and credible elections in the African sub-region.

Dr Afari Gyan left the EC on June 17, 2015 after turning 70. He helped conduct elections in other African countries and had been in charge of Ghana’s elections since 1993.

Speaking to Nii Arday Clegg on Morning Starr Monday, Mrs Osei said Dr Afari-Gyan has left big shoes to fill at the commission.

“Afari Gyan’s structure is big. He is a total icon in electoral field. He has such respect globally and has done a lot of work in Africa and the world. He has created a good platform for transparent and credible elections in Ghana for us to build on,” she said.
