Accra High Court Orders Extradition Of British Fugitive To UK

The Accra High Court has ordered the extradition of the British Fugitive, David McDermott to the UK to be tried for narcotic offences.

The Court also committed him to BNI Custody whiles he awaits the extradition warrant from the Ministry of the Interior.

The court presided over by Justice Merley Wood said if McDermott is not handed over to UK authorities within 15 days, he has the right to apply for an order from the court.

Lawyer for the accused, Victor Adawudu argued that Ghana and the UK have no extradition treaty and also the offence for which the fugitive is charged is not political.

Justice Wood however said the authorities failed to follow laid down procedures in the arrest of the fugitive.

They did not seek warrant from the Magistrate Court but this does not lead to a miscarriage of justice.

McDermott was arrested last month in the country and was described as one of Britain’s most wanted fugitive.
