Abuakwa North NDC parliamentary candidate resigns

The National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate for the Abuakwa North constituency in the Eastern region, Anthony Gyima has stepped down ahead of the November polls.

The party is expected to open nominations for interested persons from Wednesday July 20 to Friday July 22.

It is not clear what led to the decision by Mr. Gyimah to step down four months to the general elections.

Reports, however, indicate that Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Victor Smith is likely to contest the seat on the ticket of the NDC.

Ambassador Smith lost to the late MP JB Dankwa in the 2012 general elections.

Following the murder of the late JB Danquah, NPP’s Gifty Twum – a former tutor of the Akosombo International School – contested the by-election and won to represent the constituency in parliament.
