75% Of People Believe Corruption Has Increased Under Akufo-Addo – CW Ghana Study

Positioning himself as an “Incorruptible politician”, Nana Akufo-Addo said he will wipe away corruption from the system if elected President of Ghana, but all his promises to curb corruption stand exposed, as a recently conducted and Transparency International’s latest report prove.
A new study by a respected anti corruption agency in Africa has revealed that corruption has not only increased under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s tenure, but most Ghanaians believe that President Akufo-Addo is not serious about fighting corruption.

The study which covered eight regions (including the strong holds of the ruling New Patriotic Party) and other public institutions concluded that 75 % of Ghanaian households think that the level of corruption in government and public services has either increased or remained the same within the last 18 months.

The Regions covered in the study include Ashanti, Greater Accra, Eastern, Central, Brong Ahafo, Northern, Western and Upper East regions.

The study revealed that the number of people who doubt President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to fight corruption in public life has increased.

Perceptions about the NPP government’s commitment to reduce corruption in public service has seen a decline from 41% in 2017 to 31% in 2018 says the study, emphasising that people in the NPP’s strong holds such as the Ashanti and Eastern Regions also doubt the government’s commitment to contain corruption.

With 52% the Greater Accra region topped the list of regions where people doubt President Akufo-Addo government’s commitment to reduce corruption, Eastern Region at 50% is second on the list. In the Ashanti Region where NPP has dominated since 1992, 46% of people feel that President Akufo-Addo is not committed to curbing corruption.

Among the non NPP regions, 67% of people from the northern region and 52% in Upper East feel that the President Akufo-Addo led government is not committed to ending or even reducing corruption.

The study found that transport, police, land records, health, hospital services and the presidency are considered to be the most corrupt wings of public services under the administration.
