71st UN General Assembly Opens Today In New York

    The general debate of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly opens in New York Today, Tuesday, September 20, 2016, under the theme Sustainable Development Goals: a universal push to transform our world.

    During the debate which will start today will ends on Monday, September 26, 2016.

    Member states will have the opportunity to present their statements on the subject to the General Assembly and thus to the world.

    President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to make his statement to the General Assembly on Wednesday morning, September 21, 2016.

    Meanwhile, the Summit for Refugees and Migrants, the first of its kind called by the General Assembly which aims at creating a more responsible, predictable system for responding to large movement of refugees and migrants, is underway in New York today and it is being transmitted live at https://refugeesmigrants.un.org/summit.

    This one-day high-level meeting of Heads of State and Governments will be followed by a High-level meeting on antimicrobial resistance on Wednesday September 21.

    A high-level segment to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development will take place on Thursday, September 22 and would be followed by a high-level plenary meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on Monday, September 26.

    The president of the 71st session of the General Assembly, Peter Thomson of Fiji will lead the Assembly in these events.

    Mr. Thomson takes over from the outgoing president Mogens Lykletoft and will lead deliberations of the UN General Assembly for a year until the opening of the 72nd session in September 2017.
