The National Chief Imam, Sheik Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has advised politicians and the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana to ensure peaceful elections in the 2020 polls.
While entreating the EC to be fair in its operations, the Muslim Cleric also cautioned politicians to avoid activities that would plunge the country into turmoil.
“We are calling on all, particularly the EC to ensure a violence-free, free, fair, transparent election. We further call on all political stakeholders to avoid all tendencies that could jeopardise the political peace and harmony, and stability that this country has enjoyed over the period and still enjoys,” the Chief Imam appealed.
The Chief Imam communicated, his thoughts via his spokesperson Shiek Aremeyaw Shaibu, in a speech delivered at a virtual Eid-ul-Fitr celebration on Sunday, May 24.
The COVID-19 that has infected 6,683 with 1,998 recoveries and 32 deaths meant that the occasion had to deviate from the norm of 1000s gathering at the Independence Square.
This year, only 25 people were in attendance at the studio of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
Following restrictions on social gatherings and shutdown of mosques, Muslims had to observe Ramadan without congregating in large numbers.
The Muslim scholar indicated that the COVID-19 protocols had taught the Islamic community that: “We can worship our maker in private so that we can have a personal experience with him.”
He said worshippers should maintain a focus on the substance and essence of prayers rather than the form.
The Chief Imam was glad that the disruptions by COVID-19 had not affected the Ramadan period and noted that “the quality of our fasting has not been diminished”.
He commended Muslims for being responsible and avoiding meetings in open spaces to say prayers.
The Muslim leader further thanked President Nana Akufo-Addo for the appointment of Justice Issifu Imoro Tanko Amadu to the Supreme Court. He was hopeful that the move would inspire young Muslims in the legal profession across the country.
With the anticipation of easing restrictions, he urged authorities to embark on comprehensive disinfection of mosques, education complexes and other public places.
He further urged the government to finalise ongoing discussion of harmonising Islamic marriage laws in Ghana.
