The wife of business mogul and Chief Executive of Antrak Air, Baaba Asuma Banda, and former President John Agyekum Kufuor recently ‘tasted’ a version of NPP 2016 flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo’s meanness when he angrily snubbed them at a wedding of a niece of his brother Edward ‘Bumpty’s wife.
The innocent wife of the business magnate and former Chancellor of University College of Education, Winneba, Alhaji Asuma Banda, The aL-hAJJ gathered, was made to “pay” for the “sins” of her husband when the opposition New Patriotic Party standard bearer publicly gave her a dose of the attacks he has persistently unleashed on persons who disagree with him.
The twice defeated NPP presidential candidate refused to exchange pleasantries with her at a marriage ceremony between a relation of ex-president Kufuor and the Akufo-Addos at the residence of Nana Akufo Addo’s brother, Bumpty, in Accra.
According to persons who witnessed the embarrassing scene, Nana Akufo-Addo, who arrived at the ceremony with his entourage including, Dr Addo Kufuor, Nana Asante Bediatuo and Attah among others, held back his hand when it was the turn of Baaba, the wife of Alhaji Asuma Banda, to shake hands with him.
Even though she was in the company of other dignitaries that graced the occasion to pay homage to the twice defeated presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo singled her out and angrily held back his hand to avoid greeting her in the full glare of everyone.
“The lady was so ashamed and embarrassed by the cold shoulders from Nana Addo at the ‘Engagement’. Almost everybody there was looking at her but Nana Addo did not blink an eye as he looked unperturbed and, you could see from the look of the lady’s face that she was disturbed by that mistreatment,” a woman who witnessed the incident told The aL-hAJJ.
The lady, who pleaded anonymity, said “when the incident happened some of us were wondering why Nana reacted to the lady in that embarrassing manner until some people started saying that her husband (Asuma Banda) recently said Nana can never be president.”
Another male witness (name withheld) said “what transpired between Nana and the woman was the talk of town that day. Those who were at the funeral but were not closer to where the incident happened also started discussing it. In fact many of them condemned what Nana did especially when we were later informed that Nana did that because of what the woman’s husband said recently about him.”
An incident that left many at the marriage ceremony more dumfounded was when Nana Akufo-Addo, after brief appearance, left the event with his entourage in a convoy without any interaction with former President Kufuor who was said to be the leader of the family of the bridegroom.
This, according to an observer, left those who witnessed the unfortunate incident wondering whether Nana Akufo-Addo still has an axe to grind with the man who made him serve in two crucial ministries in his government.
Many were said to have attributed Nana Akufo-Addo’s snub of the most successful leader of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo in recent history to recent wave of suspension of person’s believed to be his Mr Kufuor’s loyalists, and also, allegations that the former President and his men are working against his (Nana’s) 2016 bid. Others also linked Akufo Addo’s bellicose attitude towards Baaba Asuma Banda to the recent comments by her husband.
Alhaji Asuma Banda recently told Accra-based TV3, that the twice defeated NPP Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, can “never be President of Ghana.”
Alhaji Banda who was answering questions from Kwesi Pratt, host of the station’s current affairs program, Hot Issues, argued that for one to be President he must possess certain key attributes and qualities, which Nana Addo lacks.
“The truth is he [Nana Akufo-Addo] can never be President… You see, to be a President, you must have certain structure, intelligence…,” he boldly stated.
The former Council of State member buttressed his rather audacious statement by suggesting that, for someone to be a President he must possess certain attributes, which in his opinion include intelligence and wisdom.
“You see, people take certificates in the university to be intelligent, No! You must have wisdom. There are people in this country who want to even go to Parliament and they don’t have a sleeping place in that constituency and you want to be the father of the constituency?” He asked.
When The aL-hAJJ contacted Baaba Asuma Banda, the obviously traumatized lady, though confirmed the incident, sounded shocked and couldn’t say anything further except to say she has left everything to God.
Her husband on the other hand, told this paper that that “I’m not surprised. If an aspiring President of this country can maltreat a hapless and innocent woman publicly like this, then what could he not do to his perceived political opponents as we are presently witnessing in his own party?”
“The whole world watched and heard me live on national television make my assessment of Akufo Addo. What has my wife got to do with this such that he will publicly embarrassed her in front of such important dignitaries?” he queried.
Sources in NPP have disclosed to The aL-hAJJ that Nana Akufo-Addo and his lackeys have not been happy with the comments made by the business mogul and philanthropist.
First to give Akufo-Addo’s discontent of the comment was NPP Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, who warned Alhaji Asuma Banda not to provoke her.
The foul mouth Akufo-Addo lackey fumed, “Alhaji Banda should not provoke me; he should concentrate on his crippling business and leave Akufo-Addo and the NPP alone.”
Meanwhile, persons who witnessed the incident are calling on feminist groups to condemn Nana Akufo-Addo’s behavior, arguing that “what he did is not an attack on only the innocent wife of Alhaji Asuma Banda but an attack on women in general.”
