More than 150,000 households benefited from LEAP – Mahama

President John Mahama says more than 150,000 households have benefited from the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme in his administration.

He said all the 150,000 beneficiaries under the programme which was one of the country’s five flagship poverty alleviation programmes under his government, had also been registered on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) free of charge.

In his last State of the Nation Address in Parliament, he said, “Many social protection programmes have been introduced to cushion the poor… The school feeding programme is better managed today and covers more than 1.5 million children.”

He indicated that other social interventions such as the NHIS, Basic School Capitation Grant and the Ghana School Feeding programmes, were all doing well.

President Mahama could not hide his excitement about the successes and increase in the coverage of beneficiaries.

He added that the LEAP grants were improving social inclusion for poor households, allowing them to re-establish social ties and fully participate in community, economic, religious and social lives.
Nana Akufo-Addo will take over as President come January 7, 2017 under the 1992 Constitution.
