“15 more Gitmo detainees expected in Ghana”

Member of Parliament for Manhyia, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is alleging that President John Dramani Mahama negotiated for 17 Guantanamo Bay detainees and not two as claimed by Ghana government officials.

According to him, fifteen (15) more Guantanamo bay prisoners are on their way to Ghana.

President John Mahama recently defended his decision to accommodate two Guantanamo Bay ex-detainees in Ghana, stressing that they pose no threat to Ghana’s national security.

But speaking exclusively with Adom News’ Abednego Asante Asiedu, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, accused President Mahama and his foreign affairs minister, Hannah Tetteh of concealing the truth from Ghanaians.

He added that the Minority in Parliament will invite the foreign affairs minister to explain why government failed to consult the people’s representatives before taking such a momentous decision.

In a related development, four Senators in the United States of America’s Congress have petitioned the Senate Appropriations Committee to cut off foreign aid to Ghana should the West African nation fail to prevent the two ex-detainees from Guantanamo Bay from escaping to re-engage in terrorism against the United States.

Responding to the petition by the 4 Senators, MP for Ablekuma North, Justice Joe Appiah warned that Ghana will be in trouble on more than one front if Ahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby escape, adding that President Mahama erred under Article 75 Clause 1&2 of the Constitution by unilaterally accepting to host the two.

Meanwhile, Alban Bagbin, the Majority Leader in Parliament, who usually reads the business statement for Parliament, says the Business Committee has not yet received any question about the Gitmo two.
